We just played a show with Ted Leo at our hometown venue, the Meat Locker. Ted is from the town down the road, so this was as local and it gets, I guess. The show was great, mainly because Ted Leo is:

1. Super nice

2. Super good

That's all you really need, right? The whole show renewed my pride for the small handful of really terrific bands in North Jersey. You don't have to go to Brooklyn for good music, you know.

p.s. fuck all points west. two bands from jersey. really? and most of the papers are saying one because steel train doesnt rip bruce springsteen off enough to count as a jersey band, i guess. you know, we have music here. and its GOOD. in five years (hopefully less) you'll hear about some trendy shit being all up in jersey bands, and jersey will be cool
nah, probably not. those bands will probably pretend to be from somewhere else.
well, fuck that! we won't! we're proud to be from jersey. its dirty and weird and i love it. that video was taken on the parkway, i think. i LOVE the parkway.

We played a show at Trash Bar in Williamsburg last week. Lemme tell you, it was stupid. Very, very stupid. Trash Bar is a "rock and roll bar" on one of the most gentrified streets in Williamsburg. Williamsburg doesn't even feel "cool" anymore. It feels like walking in a giant urban outfitters. The kids all have nice clothes and last year's scarves and stand around posing and drinking their PBR. It's just stupid.

So we're sitting there in this bar (which has a terrible jukebox, might I add. A good rock n' roll bar, like Maxwell's, will have an excellent jukebox) trying to find something good to listen to and looking out of place because we wear t shirts and jeans and I don't have a short little haircut or whatever. I start thinking about The Minutemen and I start thinking about punk rock and the music I love and I just keep thinking about that line, "our band could be your life" and I just GOT IT right there.

We're punk kids from jersey playing rock n roll songs, or, as Mike Watt once put it, lame guys writing songs. Our band could be your life.

Trent Reznor revealed his NIN iPhone app today and it's INSANE. It's brilliant. It's also super frustrating.
I admire Trent so much for what he's done in the industry. I started following him after this speech in Australia about how they were charging a shitload of money overseas for essentially no reason:

After this, he gave away a bunch of albums for free, etc, etc. It basically sums up everything that we feel as a band. Because of that aesthetic, we've priced our music as low as possible, put tiered pricing in place, tried to offer lot's of different versions of our record. However, it gets SO frustrating because we do not have past income to rely on. We can't finance iPhone app development. Hell, have you seen our website? I think it's pretty punk rock, but it's plain for a reason. We run everything ourselves on the strongest platforms and services we can afford. We designed this site on our own because paying hundreds of dollars for a website we couldn't figure out how to update sounded pretty fucking dumb (which is what happened with our past two sites). It just sucks when you want to do all these awesome things but you just can't. I want Tourmaline iPhone apps and attractive, well functioning distro platforms and (when the time comes) a fan-centric ticketing service that doesn't rape you in the ass.
ANYWAY.
We stopped giving the album away for free because we couldn't afford to anymore. I'm tempted to do it again because I'd like everyone in the world to have our music and enjoy it. I think we might release an EP soon or something for free. Does that sound good? I have been browsing the Brian Jonestown Massacre catalog lately and admiring their output, even the parts that suck. We've got a lot of songs. That's what we do. We make music.

Oh god. You know, SXSW is supposed to be about new music discovery and exposure for new bands. Instead we get Metallica playing the Guitar Hero Party or whatever. You know, that game that helped a bunch of 14 year old kids find out about bands most people already knew about and now won't put new developing acts in their games because they can now license for Beatles themed ones and backstroke around in money-pools?
Yeah, that one.

Do you think Metallica had to pay the $40 SonicBids fees all of us broke, hardworking shmucks had to pay to apply for SXSW? I'm sure they could spare it with their Guitar Hero royalty checks (and those Napster settlement residuals). Meanwhile the bands that think one PBR drink ticket from a venue is livin' large have to pay to maaaaaaaaaybee (i.e. no) play and get the exposure they actually need.

System is whack. Down with it.
